Reports to: Director, Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies
Job Summary: The Research Fellow develops and advances in-depth policy analysis and ground-breaking scholarly research by publishing research papers, op-eds, and books regarding, but not limited to, financial regulations, macroeconomic analysis, real estate markets and financial markets. This includes issues relevant to government intervention in capital and financial markets through the regulatory apparatuses of the Federal Reserve, FDIC, SEC, OCC, CFTC, FHFA, and other institutions. The Research Fellow must possess a strong quantitative background and understanding of credit markets. This position assists in maintaining a high-profile and national reputation for The Heritage Foundation in the fields of macroeconomics and financial economics, and advances Heritage priorities by testifying before Congress, conducting media interviews, developing strategic relationships to advance policy, and participating in major public functions and professional conferences related to economic policy and financial markets.

The salary range for this role is $128,000 - $157,000 annually. This range is a good-faith estimate, and the final salary offered to a selected candidate depends on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, and other qualifications; internal and external market pay for comparable jobs; and level of hire based on aforementioned qualifications.

Job Duties:
- Conduct novel policy analysis and produce scholarly empirical research.
- Develop innovative policy solutions.
- Advise management on programs that advance Heritage’s leadership role in financial regulations and capital markets.
- Collaborate with overlapping policy teams within the division and throughout Heritage.
- Research and write high quality papers, reports, and other publications.
- Write comments on executive branch agency rules for the public record.
- Speak at public functions and professional conferences.
- Testify on financial markets broadly and financial regulations specifically before congressional committees.
- Play an active role in the public policy community.
- Represent Heritage in major professional forums and settings, including conferences, congressional hearings, and public speaking.
- Education: Ph.D. in economics, emphasis in macroeconomics and financial econometrics
- Experience: 10+ years’ experience in the fields of economics and finance; strong research background
- Communication: Effective writer and public speaker; able to communicate policy positions in multiple media and to Congress
- Technology: Microsoft Suite; statistical packages; Python, R, and C++ proficiency preferred
- Achievement: Demonstrated financial knowledge and excellence in academia and industry
Other Requirements:
- Understand and support the Heritage mission and vision for America, the department’s goals and objectives, and the four cornerstones.
- Promote policies consistent with Heritage’s priorities; speak with one voice.
- Recognized as an authority with a demonstrated track record in econometrics and financial economics.
- Expert knowledge of quantitative modeling approaches in finance and macroeconomics; knowledge of international finance and familiarity with legislative, regulatory, and executive branch figures is preferred.
- Strong leadership ability to work with other staff and lead junior staff.
- Professionalism: highest possible degree (adaptability, maturity, integrity and accountability).
- Initiative: highest possible, requiring only general guidance with high degree of independent action.
- Innovation: good entrepreneurial skills and willingness to take initiative.
