Reports to:             Director, Donor Relations

Job Summary:        The Senior Advisor to the President for Donor Relations is responsible for closing new major gifts, meeting annual goals, and securing future income. They will build strong relationships with their donors, solicit those donors effectively, and steward those donors in such a way that makes them more likely to renew and increase support in future years. The Senior Advisor’s caseload will be comprised of some of the most generous and long-term donors to the organization. Responsibilities require traveling 60-70% of the time, and working from either a home office or at our headquarters.

Job Duties:

  • Design and implement strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward new and current Heritage and Heritage Action donors in order to grow the major gift pipeline in the region.
  • Meet both fundraising and relationship-building goals of region by managing a portfolio of approximately 75-100 donors and prospects capable of making an annual gift of at least $10,000. Raises a minimum of $2,000,000 annually.
  • Gather, record and properly classify information related to prospects and donors on portfolio in a timely manner utilizing the CRM database (Atlas).
  • Work closely with Donor Relations Portfolio Manager to identify and cultivate prospects in the region who have the capacity to move to a major giving strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Heritage Legacy Society to identify, cultivate and steward planned gifts on portfolio and develop an understanding of the principals and techniques associated with planned giving and financial and estate planning.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge about Heritage’s priorities and funding opportunities as well as the goals of the conservative movement.
  • Provide input on department projects and strategies to increase income.
  • Organize regional events; connect donors with Heritage executives and experts in an effort to advance their relationship with the organization.
  • Design and implement strategies to identify key prospects; increase their involvement in Heritage; and increase their contributions.
  • Communicate with donors through personal visits, telephone calls, and correspondence to increase our Members’ appreciation for the importance and impact of Heritage’s work.
  • Provide input on department projects and strategies to increase income.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge about the conservative movement and Heritage’s needs and interests.
  • Work closely with Director of Donor Relations to maximize potential of donors served.
  • Complete call reports and enter information into database after each donor contact.

Skill Factors:

Education: BA/BS, Master’s preferred

Experience: At least 10 years in fundraising, planned giving, sales, or marketing. 

Computers: Excellent skills in Word and Excel; some database experience required

Special Skills/Requirements:

  • Understand and support the Heritage mission and vision for America, and the department's goals and objectives;
  • Excellent communication skills; highly develop verbal skills; ability to make presentations;
  • High degree of knowledge of policy issues and conservative movement;
  • Expert knowledge of fundraising and planned giving;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team, establishing goals, and (most importantly) executing them successfully;
  • Ability to travel extensively.
