Title:                           Paralegal

Reports To:              Legal Strategy Counsel

Job Summary:         The Paralegal supports the Heritage Foundation Legal Strategy Counsel (LSC) and the Heritage Action for America General Counsel (GC) by assisting with legal services, including research on legal matters, writing and editing legal documents, and performing administrative tasks.

Job Duties:

  • Support the dual roles of the Legal Strategy Counsel and General Counsel.
  • Research statutes, regulations, legislation, judicial decisions, and other matters on request.
  • Draft correspondence and some legal documents for review by the LSC/GC.
  • Edit and proofread legal documents, correspondence, and other written documents.
  • Prepare presentations and other communications on behalf of the LSC/GC.
  • Develop and maintain an internal information organization system (encompassing both electronic and paper files) for the use of the LSC/GC.
  • Monitor requests for legal services and coordinate workflow between the LSC/GC and other staff.
  • Coordinate the collection of documents in response to discovery requests and subpoenas.
  • Perform administrative tasks including processing invoices from outside counsel for review, approval, and payment, fielding phone calls, scheduling meetings, correspondence, and special projects.
  • Assist the GC in planning and drafting Heritage Action Board meeting agendas for review and approval by the Executive Director.
  • Help maintain the proper workflow for contracts with outside entities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:       BA/BS required; graduate degree preferred. Successful completion of an ABA-                                  approved paralegal studies program
Experience:    3-4 years working as a paralegal (or equivalent) at a corporation, law firm, or                                       non-profit organization; civil litigation-support experience strongly preferred                                        (such as calendaring litigation deadlines, filing court documents, and managing                                       case files)
Communication:   Excellent and efficient communications, writing, and proofreading skills
Technology:          Electronic court filing systems (PACER), Microsoft Suite (particularly MS                                          Word and PowerPoint), database software, and electronic legal research                                                (WestLaw Classic)

Other Requirements:

  • Understand and support Heritage’s mission and vision for America, and the department’s goals and objectives.
  • General familiarity with the civil litigation process in federal courts.
  • High degree of discretion and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Highly organized; ability to accurately calendar deadlines and manage both electronic and paper files.
