Title                            Editor

Reports to:                Director, Research Editors

Job Summary:        The Editor is responsible for editing publications produced by the Heritage Research departments and, as needed, other departments. Recommend organizational improvements to drafts and identify passages that may be redundant or irrelevant. Query potential weaknesses in argumentation or content that may require clarification or additional documentation.

Job Duties:

  • Edit and/or copyedit domestic, foreign, and defense policy books, reports, and other publications produced by Heritage’s Research Departments.
  • Work with analysts and outside authors, as necessary, to ensure that all corrections are made before publication.
  • Review publications at all stages, from draft to page layout to (with books) printer proofs to assure maximum overall quality control and consistency of format.
  • Perform top-quality, precise, and timely editing.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education:                  Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:                 Three years of experience in editing, with an emphasis on public policy work.

Communication:         Exceptional verbal and written communications skills.

Technology:                Proficiency in Microsoft Word; ability to edit electronically and in conformity with tight deadlines essential. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, preferred.
