Research Assistant, Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies

Title:                         Research Assistant

Reports to:               Director, Roe Institute

Job Summary:         The Heritage Foundation’s mission is "to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense."  Based on those principles, the main objectives of the Roe Institute are to limit the size, scope, cost and intrusiveness of government and facilitate economic growth through free markets. Consistent with the mission and those objectives, the incumbent will contribute to the development of written products by providing research support to the Roe Institute and all of its units, supervised writing, and other tasks as defined by the Roe Director. Knowledge of the federal budget, federal entitlement programs, and federal regulation a must.

Job Duties:

  • Research and draft policy papers for review by senior researchers.
  • Serve on research teams with responsibility for action items.
  • Prepare remarks for speeches and conferences.
  • Provide research for Congressional testimonies.
  • Perform such other Heritage duties as assigned.

Skill Factors:

Education:                   Bachelor’s Degree

Experience:                 1 year of research and writing experience.

Computer Skills:         Microsoft Office and Internet skills; database experience helpful.

Special Skills/Requirements:  

  • Understand and support the Heritage mission and vision for America, and the department's goals and objectives.
  • Top-quality research, analysis, and writing, with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to use excel and other computational data analysis programs to organize and prepare data for use in research publications and graphics.
  • Excellent instincts and the ability to look ahead and plan accordingly.
  • Exceptionally organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-moving environment.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of the conservative movement and principles; ability to apply principles to policy research on current topics.
  • Professionalism: highest possible degree (adaptability, maturity, integrity and accountability).
