Title:                         Data Graphics Specialist

Reports to:               Director, Research Editors

Job Summary:          The Data Graphics Specialist will assist in providing creative and technical data visual services to Heritage. Responsible for creating and enforcing graphic standards for web and print and for educating directors and analysts in the research departments on the best methods of presenting research in a graphical form. Works with Heritage’s editors, production and marketing teams, and digital strategies staff in producing data visuals and related products for heritage.org, print, and social media platforms. Responsible for the quality of research graphics and for developing and implementing Heritage’s strategy for achieving the most effective presentation of research data in Heritage products.

Job Duties:

  • Maintain established graphic standards for web and print media.
  • Assist analysts in effective presentation of research in graphical form.
  • Design graphical material for web-based and printed research products.
  • Work with Creative Director and Art Director to ensure that Heritage data visuals are properly branded Heritage products..
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Editor.

Skill Factors:

Education:                   Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with experience in data-based graphic design.  Training in statistics, economics, or journalism preferred.

Experience:                 Prior experience (1) in data analysis, and (2) two to five years experience in journalism graphics or equivalent experience.

Communication:         Competent writer

Computer:                   Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator and InDesign, and MS Office

Special Skills/Requirements:  

  • Understand and support the Heritage mission and vision for America, and the department's goals and objectives
  • Exercises initiative, within mission and established policy, to achieve assigned objectives.
  • Generates and executes creative ideas to communicate research information through effective graphics.
  • Has expertise with Adobe CS Illustrator and InDesign software and, preferably, with Microsoft Excel, Adobe Photoshop, ArcGIS, and interactive programming.
  • Has excellent verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to work creatively and communicate effectively with professionals with varying degrees of experience with graphics.
  • Performs top-quality, precise, and timely work.
