Title:                         Senior Research Fellow, China

Reports to:             Director, Asian Studies Center

Job Summary:          The Senior Research Fellow, China will conduct in-depth research and writing on political/security issues involving China (PRC) and associated American interests. The Senior Research Fellow is responsible for creating a high-profile and national reputation for The Heritage Foundation through analysis of China’s military and space capabilities, its foreign policy, and its relationship with the United States.

The Senior Research Fellow is expected to be of the highest professional caliber, capable of conducting ground-breaking research and analysis that advances Heritage’s agenda and capable also of acting appropriately as a spokesman for Heritage in public events and in press.  The ideal candidate is a recognized expert in the China policy field and able to operate with limited supervision; they are sought after for leadership and counsel. They have clearly demonstrated impact over time and perform at a level recognized to be unique, authoritative, and persuasive.


Job Duties:

  • Perform timely, rigorous policy analysis and scholarly research
  • Develop innovative policy solutions
  • Promote policies consistent with Heritage’s priorities; speak with one voice
  • Research and write original high-quality papers, reports and books
  • Speak frequently at major public functions and at professional conferences in his/her field
  • Testify frequently before Congress
  • Maintain a high profile in the media and a leadership position in the public policy community
  • Advise management on programs which keep Heritage in leadership role
  • Routinely initiate and take responsibility for organizing major events and meetings



Education:                   Ph.D. or other graduate degree with Ph.D.-equivalent level of technical and research skills

Experience:                 Substantial experience at senior levels of business, government, academia, or non-profit institutions in Asian security policy. Recognized expert in fields of China and/or Taiwan policy, Indo-Pacific security affairs, Chinese military affairs, and space or cyber expertise.

Communications:       Excellent public speaker and writer. Internally and with target audiences, able to                                     persuade and change minds. Working fluency in an Asian language preferred. 

Technology:               Microsoft Office and Outlook

Achievement:             Demonstrated ongoing ability to achieve decisive changes in public policy

Innovation:                 Highest possible degree, an acclaimed policy entrepreneur in his/her field

  • Leadership skills: very strong; able and willing to lead teams and to act as mentor for less experienced staff

  • Understands and supports the Heritage mission and vision for America, and the Asian Studies Center’s goals and objectives
