Senior Trade Economist

Title:                       Jay Van Andel Senior Trade Economist

Reports to:             Director, Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies      

Job Summary:          The Senior Trade Economist is responsible for examining the impact of trade liberalization and free trade on the domestic economy through research, publications, conferences, media appearances, and other public functions.  An ability to communicate effectively and respectfully to all audiences, including those skeptical of trade, is critical.  This person must remain current on the status and details of all pending trade legislation from the time it is proposed until its possible enactment.  An ability to critically analyze proposed legislation and devise viable free trade alternatives is essential. A proficient understanding of the economics of international trade theory and policy is needed to develop analysis and policies.  The successful candidate will have a demonstrated   commitment to the principles of free enterprise.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct policy analysis and scholarly research.
  • Produce and publish high quality and timely papers, reports and commentaries.
  • Organize events and meetings.
  • Speak at major public functions.
  • Implement established methodology for evaluating countries’ trade and investment freedom for the Index of Economic Freedom.
  • Testify before Congress.
  • Communicate approved policy positions clearly to media and other audiences.
  • Interact with Congressional and Administration staff and other members of the public policy community.

Skill Factors:

Education:                   Advanced degree in Economics or related discipline.

Experience:                 5-8 years’ experience in public policy, research, or advocacy.

Communication:         Clear, cogent writer and effective public speaker.

Computer Skills:         MS Office (Outlook and Excel, including data analysis functions).

Special Skills/Requirements:  

  • Understand and support the Heritage mission and vision for America, and the department’s goals and objectives.
  • Well-versed in the economics of international trade theory and its policy applications.
  • Ability to critically analyze data and information in a fast-paced environment.
  • High motivation; initiative; entrepreneurial; good instincts.
  • Receptive to positive guidance.
