Reports to:             Director, Center for Education Policy

Job Summary:          The Heritage Foundation’s mission is “to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.” Within the Foundation and based on those principles, the main objectives of our education policy initiative, housed within the Institute for Family, Community and Opportunity, are to advance a student-centered, parental choice-based K-12 education system, restore a competitive market of higher education options and financing, and work toward eliminating federal intervention in education at all levels. Consistent with the Heritage mission and objectives, the Research Assistant will contribute to the development of written products by providing research support to senior analysts, conducting independent research, gathering data, and producing shorter analytical pieces under the supervision of senior researchers. The Research Assistant will have a basic understanding of education policy and the public policy process, and excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills.   

Job Duties:

  • Assist in researching and drafting policy papers by senior researchers
  • Publishing blogs and short research papers under general direction
  • Assist analysts in preparing for briefings and presentations
  • Organize roundtables, briefings, and events
  • Conduct media interviews, as appropriate
  • Other duties, including those of an administrative nature on behalf of the education department

Skill Factors:

Education:                    B.A. required

Experience:                  Entry level

Communications:         Strong writing and verbal communications skills; well organized

Computer:                    MS Office and Outlook, especially Excel and PowerPoint

Special Skills/Requirements:   

  • Understand and support the Heritage mission and vision for America, and the department’s goal and objectives
  • Top-quality research, analysis, writing and communication, with emphasis on accuracy, insightfulness, and timeliness
  • Ability to use Excel and other computational data analysis programs to organize and prepare data for use in research publications and graphics
  • Knowledge of the conservative movement and principles; ability to apply principles to policy research and current topics
  • Professionalism: highest possible character (maturity, integrity, and accountability)
